Kir Kanos of the Crimson Empire

(posted 11/13/2004)

This is what Imperial Royal Guards REALLY look like under all those robes. And forget those "force pikes", this Echani-style double-vibroblade is the weapon they should have used!

Kir Kanos is the main character of the Crimson Empire series of Star Wars comic books. He is fanatically loyal to the Empire and the principles of the New Order brought about by Emperor Palpatine after the fall of the Old Republic. He is so loyal to these ideals that he remained loyal to them even after the Emperor's death. He was with the royal guards who defended the Emperor's clone, and he was wounded but not killed when the Jedi attacked. He then hunted down and killed the traitorous royal guard Carnor Jax, who had proclaimed himself Emperor. Kir Kanos is sickened by the whining, feuding warlords who now run the remnants of the Empire.

Here is my Kir Kanos minifig in comparison with his likeness on the cover of Crimson Empire. Note the blaster holder. The vibroblade is made of two LEGO Katanas cut short and stuck in either end of a grey lightsaber hilt.

You're probably wondering why I gave Kanos a trans-orange head under his helmet instead of a solid black one like on the standard LEGO Royal Guards. Well, that's because the real Royal Guard helmets in the movies had sort of trans-red visors, not solid black ones. This is also seen in several scenes in the Crimson Empire comics.

After reading the Crimson Empire comic books, one gets the idea that Emperor Palpatine probably wouldn't have been killed at the hands of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader quite so easily if he hadn't sent these guys out of the room.

Kir Kanos unhelmeted. Here you can see the face decal I made for him, with his characteristic scar running across his face. Sorry about the totally bizarre and extremely annoying reflections on his face and chest here. It's not a good picture...

Yes, I have a back decal too! This side is based on another cover, in which he has that little communicator thing hanging off the back of his belt.

Kir Kanos is one of my favorite Star Wars characters, even if he isn't in the movies. He has red armor, he kicks major butt, and he has a cool attitude. Here he is taking out a stormtrooper.

Here is Kir Kanos disguised as Kenix Kil, a bounty hunter. He takes on this alternate identity to escape those who are hunting him. Namely, just about everybody in the galaxy. I'm not sure if he actually wears the same armor under his poncho, but hey, if I had changed the armor, I would have been making a whole new minifig...

But these covers still match pretty well, wouldn't you say? I tried to position the minifigs in the same poses as the ones on the actual comic cover. It's hard to do with minifigs and their limited joints though. This cover is pretty interesting, especially if you look at the guy falling down. He appears to be a stormtrooper with no black body-glove suit on under his armor...

Another cover re-creation! This is one of my favorites, but I couldn't quite position his vibroblade correctly. Again, it's hard to do poses with minifigs. I couldn't get the weapon past his helmet, and certainly not above his head. Still, it's as close as I could get with LEGO, and I think it looks pretty good.
