Firefly / Serenity Minifigs

I've had a photo of some work in progress minifigs of Jayne, Mal, and Zoe from the movie Serenity floating around on the web for a while now, so I finally decided to sit down and create the whole cast of characters!

Above are (from left to right): Shepard Book, Inara Serra, Kaylee Frye, Jayne Cobb, Malcolm Reynolds, Zoe and Wash, and River and Simon Tam. All of these minifigs are based mostly on the movie versions of the characters as opposed to the Firefly television series, but there are some changes here and there. Inara's outfit is actually based on one from the first comic book, "Those Left Behind." Although I loved the movie and TV show, I can't say I'd recommend the graphic novel... I knew as soon as I saw Shepard Book driving up in a crazy six-wheeled monster truck that this was no episode of Firefly...

Yeah, I know you were probably just thinking "Why are Book and Zoe YELLOW?!" Well, if you're one of those people who just can't stand my sticking by the classic LEGO skin color, here are some brown versions I made.

A comparison shot of the brown and yellow figs. I really like the way Shpard Book turned out. He was one of my favorite characters in the show; it's a shame the movie sort of just tossed his character out the window...

And finally, a shot of all the characters fully armed and equipped. Because I like weapons. A few notes:

- Yes, there probably could have been a better way to make Zoe's "mare's leg" rifle.
- Yes, I know they changed Inara's bow to some weird sci-fi bow/gun in the movie in post-production, but I think just the bow is cooler.
- Yes, River's hair should probably be longer, but none of the other hairpieces looked right. LEGO came out with some black Dumbledore hair right after I made these minifigs that might have worked a bit better...
- Yes, Simon is the only character without a torso decal. I didn't think one was necessary, and to be honest, all of his outfits would have been rather boring to make. *yawn* Unless I did that Alliance officer uniform he wore in the beginning of Serenity... hmm...

Fun fact: Nathan Fillion (Mal), Adam Baldwin (Jayne), and Alan Tudyk (Wash) all voiced Marines in Halo 3. If you find the IWHBYD skull in the game and activate it when playing, you can hear them make seemingly endless references to the show, including, "Sure would be nice if we had some grenades right about now!" Each one is referred to by part of their character name from Firefly at some point during the game as well. In the opening cinematic, Sgt. Johnson refers to a Marine voiced by Wash as "Hoban" (his character in the show was named Hoban Wasburne); later in the same level, he contacts a Marine voiced by Mal and calls him "Reynolds," and Marines voiced by Jayne will sometimes shout "Here comes Cobb!" I had just seen Firefly and Serenity for the first time shortly before the game came out, so I thought it was pretty awesome...
