This thing is old...
really old. Just reading the name of it really brings back a sense of
nostalgia for me. I was about 13 years old when I made this level, and
at the time, my brother Ryan and I were in charge of "The Saber Clan,"
an online gaming clan for JK. In case you couldn't tell, I still take
half my name from that clan. Besides saber fighting and gun fighting,
one of my favorite ways to play Jedi Knight online was "role-playing."
Each player would join the game, choose their role (usually simply by
dictating it to the host via the chat, nothing official), and then play
around. There were several downloadable maps that really made this into
a whole new game type, such as the Baron's Hed RPG, but I still
preferred the more freeform type of play, where players basically
chatted to each other as they ran around and clicked the spacebar (which
made your character's hand reach out to "grab" things) in order to
role-play. It doesn't sound like much, but I always did have a wild
imagination, so it worked for me. However, I always thought it would be
nice to have a map completely dedicated to freeform RPG gameplay... and
so the Mos Espa RPG was born.
This is a simple level, with horribly, hideously
bland texturing and extremely poor architecture (I freely admit it now), but it
DOES
play a good RPG, if you just use your imagination a bit. It was because of the demand for good RPG levels at the
time that this level became the fifth most downloaded level on Massassi.net
during JK's prime, and one of the most highly-played levels on the MSN
Internet Gaming Zone. Nothing made me feel better than going online and
finding a bunch of game rooms dedicated to the MERPG (which I would often
join and claim to be the level's creator, often to be disbelieved). The map also won Level of the Week at massassi.net, and can be seen in the Level of the Week archives, here:
http://www.massassi.net/levels/lotw/. As of my writing this, it
currently has been downloaded 13,336 times. I was amazed with its success, but I
never released its anticipated sequel, the Coruscant RPG, due to many errors
I could not fix, and because of my waning interest in Jedi Knight. Still,
here is the good ol' MERPG for those of you who'd like to check it out:
This level takes place in the streets of the Tatooine town of Mos Espa,
during the days of Kyle Katarn. It is made for RPG. It was intended to be
like Drazen Isle on Tatooine without the lag, with Barons Hed RPG type jobs,
and a Dralloc Hotel feel. It turned out pretty well. Please keep in mind
this is the first level I have ever released, even though I have worked on
editing all of this year and some of last and worked on this particular
level all summer! There is a police station with a jail, an Outlaw hideout,
a Restaurant, a Cantina, a Med Center, a house, a hangar, a gun store, and a
hotel. There is also a cool Air Shaft that surrounds the whole level and has
lots of sniping spots along the way, so a skilled assassin can take out a
few people. In addition to these, there are lots more secrets, which are
listed in the SECRETS.txt file included in the zip file. This level is best
played FF (with Force Jump), RPG, and with a SNIPING mod that gives you a
scope, like Guns and Such or Killer's Weapons Patch. I hope I have written
enough to get you to download the level now...
Download from The Massassi Temple
Download from
Saber-Scorpion's Lair (Compressed .zip file, 1.6 MB)
1 - Unzip the ZIP file's contents to a folder. Any temporary folder will do.
2 - Read the readme. That's what it's for.
3 - Move the file with the .GOB extension to your Episode folder in your
Jedi Knight directory. On most computers, that would be "C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Jedi
Knight\Episode". If the Episode folder does not exist, simply create one.
4 - The level should now appear in your multiplayer levels list in Jedi
Knight. If the level is not showing up, you may have too many levels in your
folder already or you may have done something wrong. Try again.
HAVE FUN!
